The phrase "separation of church and state" is often misapplied in today's society. While Jefferson believed that there should be a "wall of separation" between church and state, his intent was to keep the government out of religion, not the other way around. That phrase was taken out of context in the 1940s and has since been ingrained in society as being in a founding document. However, the original phrase comes from a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptists to assure them that the government would not oppress them like what had happened in Europe.
