Between 1941-1946 nearly 1,000
pilots trained at Tuskegee Institute (founded
in 1881 by Booker T. Washington). These pilots are known as Tuskegee Airmen. They formed the 99th Fighter Squadron
and went overseas in 1942. Later the 99th joined three other all-black squadrons in the 332nd Fighter Group
. Especially noteworthy, these pilots flew over 1,400 combat missions
