On behalf of the citizens of Michigan, I, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm, do hereby proclaim the week of November 23-29, 2008, as America’s Christian Heritage Week.

Whereas, America’s Christian Heritage Week was first introduced by the U.S. House of Representatives on August 11, 1992, and this year marks the 17th annual nationwide observance; and,

Whereas, the influence of Christianity upon American communities is evident by their many churches and Christian charities, ministries, missions, schools, holiday seasons, and a willingness of Americans to love their neighbors as themselves; and,

Whereas, churches nationwide are encouraged to celebrate America’s Christian Heritage Week with relevant Sunday School lessons, sermons, youth programs, patriotic song services, and prayer meetings; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of November 23-29, 2008, as America’s Christian Heritage Week in Michigan.

WHEREAS, this nation was founded on principles of religious freedom and our founding fathers sought God, his blessings and guidance as they established these United States of America as a free and independent nation; and

WHEREAS, the Christian heritage of our nation is recognized in the writings and accomplishments of such renowned individuals as Christopher Columbus, William Bradford, George Washington, John and Abigail Adams, James Madison, Patrick Henry, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and countless others, and in the constitutions of the several sovereign states, and innumerable public documents; and

WHEREAS, the history of Christian faith and traditions of our people is reflected in countless practices of the institutions and officials of our government, such as prayer and Scripture reading preceding each and every session of Congress, from its inception until this day; and

WHEREAS, the importance of our Christian heritage to the institutions, values and vision of our nation is immeasurable, and teaching our children about the spiritual values of our historical Christian heritage will help them understand and appreciate our nation’s history; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting to recognize the Pilgrims’ First Thanksgiving as a special time and reason for celebrating our families, health, love and friendship, as well as acknowledging our nation’s Christian heritage; now

THEREFORE, I, M. Jodi Rell, Governor of the State of Connecticut, do hereby proclaim the week of November 23 – 29, 2008 as

in the State of Connecticut.

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, Thanksgiving marks the seventeenth consecutive Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia; continuing a tradition of annual proclamations beginning with Governor Gaston Caperton in 1992 through 1996 and continued by Governor Cecil Underwood from 1997 to 2000, Governor Bob Wise from 2001 through 2004, Governor  Joe Manchin from 2005 through 2010, and Governor Earl Ray Tomblin in 2011 and 2013; and

WHEREAS, Mayors from at least 76 cities, towns, and villages throughout West Virginia have proclaimed Christian Heritage week; and

WHEREAS, voluntarily applying one’s Christian faith to daily life contributes to keeping our families secure, communities safe, and Mountainers free; and

WHEREAS, churches are encouraged to participate with relevant Sunday School lessons, sermons, readings of proclamations, youth programs, patriotic song services, and prayer meetings; and

WHEREAS, Thanksgiving week is an appropriate time to center attention on our thanks to Almighty God for His great and good Providence and for the Christian faith which is part of West Virginia’s and America’s history.

NOW, THEREFORE, I Emmett S. Pugh III, Mayor of the City of Beckley, do hereby proclaim November 23-29, 2008 as

CHRISTIAN HERITAGE WEEK

in the City of Beckley and invite all citizens to join in this local event each in their own way.

Proclamation

WHEREAS,  the Preamble to the Constitution of West Virginia declares, “Since through Divine Providence we enjoy the blessings of civil, political and religious liberty, we, the people of West Virginia reaffirm our faith in and constant reliance upon God…”; and

WHEREAS,  the Bill of Rights to the Constitution of West Virginia guarantees religious freedom; and the “Sundays excepted” provision of Article 7, Chapter 14 historically recognizes Sunday as a day of rest and worship; and

WHEREAS,  for many West Virginians, public school days once began with a daily Pledge of Allegiance, prayer and Bible reading; and

WHEREAS, the state songs, The West Virginia Hills and West Virginia My Home Sweet Home, contain the lyrics, “With their summits bathed in glory, like our Prince Immanuel’s land!” and “There I work, and I play, and I worship Sunday,”; and

WHEREAS,  the influence of Christianity in West Virginia is evident by her many churches and Christian charities, ministries, missions and schools; cherished Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving holiday seasons; and a willingness of Mountaineers to love thy neighbor as thyself; and

WHEREAS, Thanksgiving week is an appropriate time to center attention on our thanks to Almighty God for His great and good Providence and for the Christian faith, which is part of West Virginia’s and America’s history.

Now, Therefore, Be it Resolved that I, Joe Manchin III, Governor of the Great State of West Virginia, do hereby proclaim November 23-29, 2008 as Christian Heritage Week in the Mountain State and invite all citizens to join me in this observance.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of West Virginia to be affixed.

Of the

Commonwealth of Kentucky

To All To Whom These Presents Shall Come:

WHEREAS, The Preamble to the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Kentucky states, “We the people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, grateful to Almighty God for the civil, political and religious liberties we enjoy, and invoking the continuance of these blessings, do ordain and establish this Constitution;” and

WHEREAS, Benjamin Franklin, at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 declared: “It is impossible to build an empire without our Father’s aid. I believe the sacred writings which say that ‘Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it’” (Psalm 127:1); and

WHEREAS, George Washington enunciated, “Animated alone by the pure spirit of Christianity, and conducting ourselves as the faithful subjects of our free government, we may enjoy every temporal and spiritual felicity;” and

WHEREAS, Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, wrote “Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed the conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?” and

WHEREAS, James Madison, father of the U.S. Constitution, advocated “the diffusion of the light of Christianity in our nation” in his Memorial and Remonstrance; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Henry quoted Proverbs 14:34 for our nation: “Righteousness alone can exalt a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people;” and

WHEREAS, George Mason, in his Virginia Declaration of Rights, forerunner to our U.S. Bill of Rights, affirmed that “it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love and charity towards each other;” and

WHEREAS, These and many other truly great men and women of American who were giants in the structuring of American history were Christian statesmen and stateswomen of caliber and integrity who did not hesitate to express their faith;

NOW, THEREFORE, I ERNIE FLETCHER, Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, do hereby proclaim April 15-21, 2007, as

CHRISTIAN HERITAGE WEEK

in Kentucky.
