In harmony with

Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia

as proclaimed by Governor Joe Manchin III

WHEREAS, Thanksgiving week marks the fourteenth consecutive Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia; continuing a tradition of proclamations beginning with Governor Gaston Caperton in 1992 thru 1996, Governor Cecil Underwood from 1997 thru 2000 and Governor Bob Wise from 2001 thru 2004; and,

WHEREAS, Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia has become an annual local and statewide observance; being the most popular and most requested proclamation according to the Office of the Governor; and,

WHEREAS, the state song, West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home, contains the lyrics, “There I work, and I play, and I worship Sunday”; and,

WHEREAS, Psalm 127:1 warns, “Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman keeps awake in vain.”

WHEREAS, area churches are encouraged to celebrate Christian Heritage Week with relevant Sunday School lessons, sermons, reading of proclamations, youth programs, patriotic song services and prayer;

NOW, THEREFORE, Let it be Known that November 20-26, 2005, is hereby proclaimed as:

CHRISTIAN HERITAGE WEEK

in the

WHEREAS: Thanksgiving week continues the long tradition of Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia. Which began with annual proclamations from Governor Gaston Caperton in 1992 and has been continued by Governor Cecil Underwood from 1997 through 2000, Governor Bob Wise from 2001 through 2004 and Governor Joe Manchin through 2005; and

WHEREAS: Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia has become an annual local and statewide observance and has became the most popular and most requested proclamation according to the Office of the Governor; and

WHEREAS: The state song, West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home, contains the lyrics,“There I work, and I play, and I worship Sunday;” and

On behalf of the citizens of Michigan, I, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm, do hereby proclaim the week of November 20, 2005, as CHRISTIAN HERITAGE WEEK.

Whereas, In Michigan, we are fortunate to have been blessed with beautiful rivers, lakes, fields, forests, and a people who, through hard work and intellectual effort and toil, have made cultural, industrial, agricultural, and educational advancements for the enrichment of life for our citizens; and,

Whereas, In addition to having many blessings for which to be thankful, our society is also faced with difficult challenges, international unrest, and uncertain and changing times which test our people and challenge their beliefs; and,

Whereas, Christian heritage is treasured by many Americans and gives them strength during trying times; and,

Whereas, Christian Heritage Week provides Christian American citizens an opportunity to acknowledge their blessings, to contemplate the numerous challenges that society and the nation face here at home and throughout the world, and to reaffirm their spiritual roots; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of November 20, 2005, as Christian Heritage Week in Michigan and I encourage all of Michigan’s citizens of the Christian faith to recognize the importance of Christian beliefs and values to the life and culture of our state and nation.

Alabama 2005

PROCLAMATION

By the Governor of Alabama

WHEREAS, the Preamble to the Constitution of the State of Alabama states that “We, the people of the State of Alabama, in order to establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, invoking the favor and guidance of Almighty God do ordain and establish the following Constitution and form of government for the State of Alabama;” and

WHEREAS, Benjamin Franklin, at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 stated, “It is impossible to build an empire without or Father’s aid. I believe the sacred writings which say that ‘Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it’” (Psalm 127:1); and

WHEREAS, George Washington enunciated, “animated alone by the pure spirit of Christianity, and conducting ourselves as the faithful subjects of our free government, we may enjoy every temporal and spiritual felicity;” and

WHEREAS, Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, wrote, “Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed the conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?” and

WHEREAS, James Madison, father of the U.S. Constitution, advocated “the diffusion of the light of Christianity in our nation” in his Memorial and Remonstrance; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Henry quoted Proverbs 14:34 for our nation: “Righteousness alone can exalt a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people;” and

WHEREAS, George Mason, in his Virginia Declaration of Rights, forerunner to the U.S. Bill of Rights, affirmed, “That it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love and charity towards each other,” and

WHEREAS, These, and many other truly great men and women of America, giants in the structuring of American history, were Christian statesmen of caliber and integrity who did not hesitate to express their faith:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of the State of Alabama, do hereby proclaim, November 20 through November 26, 1005, as

Proclamation

WHEREAS,  the Preamble to the Constitution of West Virginia declares, “Since through Divine Providence we enjoy the blessings of civil, political and religious liberty, we, the people of West Virginia reaffirm our faith in and constant reliance upon God…”; and,

WHEREAS,  the Bill of Rights to the Constitution of West Virginia guarantees religious freedom to all people; and,

WHEREAS,  for many West Virginians, public school days once began with a daily Pledge of Allegiance, prayer and Bible reading; and,

WHEREAS, the state songs, The West Virginia Hills and West Virginia My Home Sweet Home, contain the lyrics, “With their summits bathed in glory, like our Prince Immanuel’s land!”; and,

WHEREAS,  the influence of Christianity in West Virginia is evident by her many churches and Christian charities, ministries, missions and schools; cherished Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving holiday seasons; and a willingness of Mountaineers to love thy neighbor as thyself; and

WHEREAS, Thanksgiving week is an appropriate time to center attention on our thanks to Almighty God for His great and good Providence and for the Christian faith, which is part of West Virginia’s and America’s history.

Now, Therefore, Be it Resolved that I, Joe Manchin III, Governor of the Great State of West Virginia, do hereby proclaim November 20-26, 2005 as Christian Heritage Week in the Mountain State and encourage all citizens to acknowledge, appreciate and celebrate each in their own way the heritage of our great state where our motto is Mountaineers Are Always Free.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of West Virginia to be affixed.
