In harmony with

Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia

As proclaimed by Governor Bob Wise

WHEREAS, Thanksgiving week marks the fourth consecutive year Governor Wise has proclaimed Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia; honoring a thirteen year tradition  beginning with Governor Gaston Caperton in 1992 thru 1996 and continued by Governor Cecil Underwood from 1997 thru 2000; and,

WHEREAS, Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia has become an annual local and statewide observance; being the most popular and most requested proclamation according to the Office of the Governor; and,

WHEREAS, the state song, West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home, contains the lyrics, “There I work, and I play, and I worship Sunday”; and,

WHEREAS, the influence of Christianity upon West Virginia communities is evident by their many churches, Christian schools and missions; cherished Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving holiday seasons; and a willingness of Mountaineers to love thy neighbor as thyself; and,

WHEREAS, preachers at local churches are encouraged to celebrate Christian Heritage Week with relevant Sunday School lessons, sermons, readings of the proclamations, youth programs, patriotic song services and prayer;

NOW, THEREFORE, Let it be Known that November 21-27 2004, is hereby proclaimed as:

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, our Founding Fathers, with knowledge and understanding of Judeo-Christian values and principles, were men of integrity and vision who were aware of the ethical and moral natures of policy and law; and

WHEREAS, George Washington stated, “it is impossible to govern rightly without God and the Bible”; and

WHEREAS, Americans will benefit from sharing the spiritual gifts of humility, joy, patience, kindness, goodness and self-control, and practicing the noble quality of “love your neighbor as yourself”; and

WHEREAS, our nation, during this time of worldwide strife and turmoil, has need for trust, hope and our Creator’s powerful protection; and

WHEREAS, Thanksgiving is a permanent national holiday and is a time to reflect on and appreciate the religious influence on our young nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pegeen Hanrahan, by the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Gainesville, do hereby proclaim November 21-27, 2004 as

Christian Heritage Week

in the City of Gainesville and invite all our citizens to give thanks, each in their own way, for the many freedoms we enjoy.

To All To Whom These Presents Shall Come:

WHEREAS, The Preamble to the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Kentucky states that “We the people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, grateful to Almighty God for the civil, political and religious liberties we enjoy, and invoking the continuance of these blessings, do ordain and establish this Constitution”; and

WHEREAS, George Washington enunciated, “animated alone by the pure spirit of Christianity, and conducting ourselves as the faithful subjects of our free government, we may enjoy every temporal and spiritual felicity”; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, wrote “Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed the conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?”; and

WHEREAS, George Mason, in his Virginia Declaration of Rights, forerunner to our U.S. Bill of Rights, affirmed: “That it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love and charity towards each other”; and

WHEREAS, These and many other truly great men and women of America, who were fundamental in the structuring of American history, were Christian statesmen of caliber and integrity who did not hesitate to express their faith;

NOW, THEREFORE, I ERNIE FLETCHER, Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, do hereby proclaim April 18-24, 2004, as

On behalf of the citizens of Michigan, I, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm, do hereby proclaim the week of November 21, 2004, as CHRISTIAN HERITAGE WEEK.

Whereas, In Michigan, we are fortunate to have been blessed with beautiful rivers, lakes, fields, forests, and a people who, through hard work and intellectual effort and toil, have made cultural, industrial, agricultural, and educational advancements for the enrichment of life for our citizens; and,

Whereas, In addition to having many blessings for which to be thankful, our society is also faced with difficult challenges, international unrest, and uncertain and changing times which test our people and challenge their beliefs; and,

Whereas, Christian heritage is treasured by many Americans and gives them strength during trying times; and,

Whereas, Christian Heritage Week provides Christian American citizens an opportunity to acknowledge their blessings, to contemplate the numerous challenges that society and the nation face here at home and throughout the world, and to reaffirm their spiritual roots; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of November 21, 2004, as Christian Heritage Week in Michigan and I encourage all of Michigan’s citizens of the Christian faith to recognize the importance of Christian beliefs and values to the life and culture of our state and nation.

WHEREAS,  the Preamble to the Constitution of West Virginia declares, “Since through Divine Providence we enjoy the blessings of civil, political and religious liberty, we, the people of West Virginia reaffirm our faith in and constant reliance upon God…”; and,

WHEREAS,  the Bill of Rights to the Constitution of West Virginia guarantees religious freedom of religious speech and worship  to all citizens, and Article 7 Chapter 14 recognizes Sunday as a day of rest and worship; and,

WHEREAS,  for many West Virginians, public school days once began with a daily Pledge of Allegiance, prayer and Bible reading; and,

WHEREAS, the state songs, The West Virginia Hills and West Virginia My Home Sweet Home, contain the lyrics, “With their summits bathed in glory, like our Prince Immanuel’s land!”; and,

WHEREAS,  the influence of Christianity in West Virginia is evident by her many churches and Christian charities, ministries, missions and schools; cherished Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving holiday seasons; and a willingness of Mountaineers to love thy neighbor as thyself; and,

WHEREAS, Thanksgiving week is an appropriate time to center attention on our thanks to Almighty God for His great and good Providence and for the Christian faith, which is part of West Virginia’s and America’s history.

Now, Therefore, Be it Resolved that I, Bob Wise, Governor of the Great State of West Virginia, do hereby proclaim November 21-27, 2004, as Christian Heritage Week in the Mountain State and encourage all citizens to acknowledge, appreciate and celebrate each in their own way the heritage of our great state where our motto is Mountaineers Are Always Free.

Whereas, during the week of May 4-10, 2003, the Annual Christian Heritage Week observance will be celebrated in communities across our State and Nation; throughout the history of our country, Americans have invoked the tenets of their faith to sustain them in all areas of their lives; this occasion offers citizens the opportunity to join in recognizing the enduring values and religious principles upon which many of our Nation’s founders looked for guidance; and

Whereas, September 11, 2001 will always be remembered as a day that irrevocably changed the face of our State and Nation and that brought profound realization of the preciousness of life; as our Nation’s armed forces serve to preserve and protect the values upon it is built, we all are compelled to reflect upon the benefits of freedom and democracy, and those priorities we hold highest—family, friends and the communities from which we derive our strength; and

Whereas, as citizens who have historically shared a broad consensus of religiously inspired values and an enduring belief in religious freedom, this observance is testimony to an increased acknowledgement of the long and venerable role that Christianity has played in the history of our country; it also underscores the well-documented foundational influence that Christian philosophy and ideals have had on many great men and women whose named are emblazoned upon the illustrious pages of American history; and

Whereas, inspired by the fervent words of many of our national leaders and other prominent individuals who have helped advance the progress and growth of our country, the observance of Christian Heritage Week focuses on youth-oriented activities to increase awareness and appreciation among young people for the strong historical foundations and religious ideals upon which our Nation was founded; and

Whereas, it is fitting that the Eighth Annual Christian Heritage Week is celebrated, providing a means by which many of our citizens can give expression to their religious faith and heritage;

Now, Therefore, I, George E. Pataki, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby recognize May 4-10, 2003 as

WHEREAS, the influence of Christianity in our communities is seen by many churches and Christian schools; cherished Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving seasons; and a willingness of Mountaineers to love thy neighbor as thyself; and,

WHEREAS, the state song, West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home, contains the lyrics, “There I work, and I play, and I worship Sunday”; and,

WHEREAS, Thomas Jefferson warned, “Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God?” (Notes on the State of Virginia, 1781)
